Alice in Chains’ Sap (1992) is a haunting and introspective five-track EP that showcases the band’s softer, more melodic side. Released between their debut album Facelift and the heavy-hitting Dirt, this acoustic-driven record was a surprising yet deeply emotional detour for the Seattle grunge icons.
Featuring Layne Staley’s unmistakable vocals alongside Jerry Cantrell’s signature harmonies, Sap offers a mix of melancholic beauty and eerie storytelling. “Brother” sets the tone with its gentle acoustic strumming and heartfelt lyrics, while “Got Me Wrong” became a standout track, later gaining even more popularity after appearing on the Clerks soundtrack.
“Right Turn” is a rare grunge supergroup moment, featuring Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) and Mark Arm (Mudhoney) in a powerful vocal showcase. The EP closes with “Love Song,” a strange, almost tongue-in-cheek track that contrasts the serious mood of the rest of the record.
A must-have for any Alice in Chains fan, Sap is an essential listen that proves the band’s ability to deliver raw emotion without the heavy distortion.
